Shaykhul Islam Hadhrat Mufti Taqi Usmani (Hafizahullah) once mentioned: If a servant of Allah presented my respected father (Hadhrat Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib) with a gift, especially someone who was not financially well-off but gave according to their capacity, he would receive with great appreciation.
For example, if a person presented eight annas (a paltry amount), or one rupee, my father would accept the gift with great delight. It felt as if he viewed the gift with great esteem and also expressed happiness over it. It’s another matter that he would later reciprocate or reward it, but he accepted it with great respect and honour.
One day, I asked him, “Hadhrat! Why do you value a modest gift so much?” He replied that among all the sources of income, there is no source purer and cleaner than the gift of love from a Muslim. Why? Because with all other sources of income, such as trade, agriculture, and employment, there is doubt whether we have fulfilled our obligations correctly or not.
