The Remedy for Spiritual Malady

Summary and Main Points of Jumuah talk by Hadhrat Shaykh Abdul Mueed (Hafizahullah) of Sukkar, Pakistan – 15 November 2024, 13 Jamaadul Ula 1446 at Masjide Mahmood, Durban, South Africa.

All praise and gratitude is due to Allah Ta’ala who has given us the opportunity to be in His House. May our coming here be a means of our reformation and may we truly attach ourselves to the Masjid.

Allah Ta’ala declares in the Quran: ‘Inform my servants that I am most forgiving and merciful and that my punishment is severe.’

We live in an era of turbulence and trials of all kinds – difficulties are being experienced financially, in relationships, in marriages, etc. However, we identify with these problems but not their cause.

The cause of our difficulties as per the Quran is our wrong doings and misdeeds. We tend to overlook our misdeeds and pin our hope in Allah’s mercy.

Hope is a good thing provided it is premised on good actions. Hope without good deeds is actually deception. Allah’s declaration of mercy and forgiveness is not a means to validate our negligence and sins. Allah warns us further that His punishment is also severe.

Materialism and worldly engrossment has consumed us. It has caused us to pander to our base desires and passions. The remedy is to reflect over Allah’s power and ability to hold us accountable.

Restraining oneself is not difficult. Committing sins is also easy. We need to control and restrain ourselves in the face of sin. Our problem is we do not want to exercise restraint. There is no wazifa or easy formula to avoid sin.

The ability to self restrain is within every person – the more we exercise this control the stronger this ability becomes.

The reason we are not progressing is due to us not wanting to confide our illnesses and wrongs to someone who can help and guide us – the true servants of Allah Ta’ala will help us to overcome our maladies.

When we regard ourselves as sinful, we will acquire the ability to repent. Develop steadfastness in opposing one’s desires – at times even forgo permissible things and this will aid in avoiding the unlawful.

Communicate with the nafs and reflect over the wrath and punishment of Allah Ta’ala. A disruption in a worldly relationship makes one sad and unhappy. So how can we displease Allah? How much uneasiness will that create?

Another matter of detriment is to think great of oneself, to be self admiring. This makes one regard others as inferior and lesser. This malady must be treated and remedied in the company of the spiritual doctor.

Hakeem Jalinoos was asked which is the worst illness, he remarked, ‘the illness that is not diagnosed, otherwise, every illness is treatable.’

Let us regard ourselves as spiritually ill and resort to Taubah and repentance. We should seek forgiveness to remedy ourselves. Be conscious of Allah’s presence. Avoid over consuming social media, as it is wreaking havoc in our lives.

As we build and develop our relationship with Allah Ta’ala, we will gain greater proficiency. This will lead to greater happiness and peace.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us this worry, remove our negligence and pride and grant us the ability to become good people.
